KINDERGARTEN NEWS
December 8, 2017Dear Kindergarten Families,
The month of December is a very hectic one! There are several important events please make sure you are checking your child’s folder everyday for letters detailing things you need to know.
Christmas In The Round, is our Christmas celebration and will take place on December 22nd. Our class has been working very hard practicing our performance of Silent Night. Practice does make perfect and thus your cooperation at home making sure your child practices on a daily basis are necessary. There will be a letter going home on Monday detailing dress requirements for the performance. On that day we will have an early dismissal. Children will need to be picked up by1pm or immediately following the performances and there will be no aftercare.
The field trip permission slip for the up-coming Mrs.Claus performance at the Beverly Center is due Friday. On Wednesday December 20th we will have our annual Pajama and a Movie Day. More details to follow.
In Religion we have talked about Advent, which is the 4 week period just before Christmas in which we prepare ourselves for the birth of Jesus. We made Advent wreaths, we have an Advent calendar countdown, and have discussed ways in which we can prepare for Christmas. In the weeks to follow we will continue to discuss and to prepare for Christmas.
In SuperKids we have finished the unit on Ii in which we met Icky. With Icky we have identified initial, medial, /i/. As well as encoded and decoded CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) pattern words. We have now started the next unit which focuses on Tt. The newest members of the Superkid family are Tic, Tac, and Toc which are Terrible-Triple-Trouble! During this unit students will monitor reading comprehension, draw conclusions, recognize patterns, and use expressive writing among other things.
In Math we have been very busy bees! We completed a lesson in which they created matching representations for a number between 5-10, then, discussed and evaluated those representations on a different day. We used number cards to practice numeral recognition, sequencing, and matching sets to numerals. We played a game called Roll and Record or “Dice Race” in which they rolled a dice and colored a box with the number they rolled. This activity helps them explore probability. We also played “Monster Squeeze” in which they practiced number recognition and explored number relationships i.e. greater/less. We also used calculators practice ranging and recording numbers to represent objects, such as their age, legs on a chair, or number of students in the class. We explored shapes by feel, the kids had to put their hands in the “Feely Box” and feel a shape then, recognize, describe, and name the shape and its attributes.
In Social Studies and Science we have shifted our focus to winter. We have read about and discussed how different animals and people prepare for the winter months. They have learned about hibernation, migration, and adaptation. We have also discussed the Arctic and its characteristics.
Please make sure you are allowing time on a daily basis for your child to do his/her homework. Children should be reading every night for at least 20 minutes.
Have a safe weekend!!!

Dear Kindergarten Families,
Parent/Teacher conferences will take place on Wednesday November 22, 2017. Please make sure you sign up for one. The week of Thanksgiving our school will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair. Scholastic provides quality books at an affordable price and is also a good way to raise funds for the school. Our school receives a portion of sales for use in purchasing books and other supplies to be used in our rooms. Your children will be very excited to share with you the books they want to buy after touring the fair on preview day (the Friday before). Stop by after or before your conference and check out the selection of books.
The Religion theme of the week was “Caring for Others”. We read a story about a girl who’s family volunteers at their Church on Saturday evenings to feed families in need. The girl realizes that there aren’t enough toys and books for the children to play with after dinner. She then decides to donate some of her own toys and books to help. We discussed that God cares for us, and when we care for others we share God’s love with them. We created a “Caring Tree” in which every student drew a picture on a leaf that shows one way we can care for others.
In SuperKids we met the Superkid Sal. Sal likes to play sports of every kind. While learning about Sal we focused on the sound for Ss. With Sal the students completed independent story reading. They took turns sounding out the words in a story about Sal. They did very well. Sal’s workbooks are going home today (Friday) make sure to review them with your student. Today we also met the newest member of the Superkid family, Lily Ping. Lily loves to play house with her toy lion family and is here to help us explore the sound for Ll.
In Math we have continued to work on our number books and have so far completed numbers 1-8. We should be able to finish numbers 0,9, and 10 next week. We compared and described objects of varying lengths using words like shorter, longer, and the same length. We used ten frames to play a game called Ten-Bean spill in which we used two-color counters to explore number pairs that add to 10. Students were introduced to a game called “Spin a Number” in which they practiced numeral recognition, counting, and one-to-one correspondence as they played. The class also used positional language such as under-over-next to, while following and giving directions for an obstacle course in the classroom. They had a blast in this lesson!
In Social Studies and Science we focused why we celebrate Thanksgiving. During the week we learned some facts about the Mayflower Voyage through an instructional video. Students then made paper plate ships and wrote on them a couple of facts about the voyage. We also discussed what the pilgrim houses would have looked like and completed a comparison drawing to modern houses. Lastly, we talked about the Wampanoag lifestyle and housing. We then created our own tepees, and used Native American symbols to decorate them. They are displayed on their cubbies so take a look the next time you are in the building.
Please make sure you are allowing time on a daily basis for your child to do his/her homework. Children should be reading every night for at least 20 minutes.
